A Rockford-area truck driver faces a long road to recovery after being severely beaten during an overnight stop at the TA Travel Center in Effingham, Illinois.
According to Effingham Police Chief Kurt Davis, the incident occurred at approximately 1:25 a.m. Saturday. Police continue to investigate and have released limited information about the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The victim has been identified as Corey Clayton, a driver for Meiborg Companies who was returning to Rockford with a load when he stopped in Effingham.
According to a GoFundMe established to assist Clayton and his family, he was attacked by multiple individuals and beaten severely enough that he lost consciousness. Another truck driver reportedly encountered the attack and chased the individuals away.
Clayton was subsequently airlifted to a hospital for emergency treatment.
The fundraiser says his injuries include a brain bleed requiring surgery and injuries requiring facial reconstructive surgery. Additional trucking-industry coverage reports that Clayton is still in his first year as an over-the-road truck driver.
TWOSU News also spoke directly with Meiborg Companies, Coreys employer, Tony Askins, Meiborgs Chief Marketing Officer reiterated that Clayton faces a long road to recovery and is expected to remain out of work for a substantial period of time.
Meiborg has publicly described Clayton as a valued member of its company and said the fundraiser will help support his family and cover expenses associated with his hospitalization, surgeries and extended period away from work.
Support for Clayton has grown rapidly. Local reporting indicated the fundraiser collected nearly $9,000 within its first few days. By Tuesday morning, trucking-industry reporting indicated donations had climbed to $12,803 toward a $14,000 goal.
Police said no arrests had been made at the time of the original report.
Chief Davis said investigators currently believe the attack was an isolated incident and authorities had no reason to believe there was an ongoing threat to the public.
Police have declined to release additional details while the investigation remains active.
A fundraiser titled “Help Corey Clayton Recover” has been established to assist Clayton and his family with medical expenses and financial support while he remains unable to work.
